Vintage mechanical alarm watches used in the past (1950s to 70s) were very useful & considered a luxury for the elite, as traveling to different countries or stae were becoming a common affair for businessmen & travelers alike. Thus during this booming era, mechanical alarm watches became popular, as you can use them as & when you require a reminder, remember that back in those days, many electronic gadgets, like mobile phones, pagers, etc were not available yet.
There are a few variations of mechanical alarm watches & they work on a similar principle & that's a "hammer" that hits either a pin soldered to the backcase or the mainplate of the movement. Famous brands would be the Vulcain cricket & Lecoultre memovox. There are many others & they are just as collectible.
These alarm watches' loudness can range from soft light vibrations to super loud "scare the shit out of me" versions.
The soft ones were for people who wants discreet alerts & most probably used in boardrooms during meetings or environments that were not noisy. The super loud ones were favored by people who are either deaf or require these mechanical wonders to work in places where noises are of abundance.
The 2 types of mechanism used are different by the power source, the 1st type shares the power source between the alarm & watch, so it only rings out for a couple of seconds to save energy for the watch to keep running. The 2nd type has 2 different mainspring barrels & the alarm rings till the alarm barrel is drain dry of spring energy or turned off by the user, while the other spring barrel used for the moment is kept untouched for purely time keeping purposes. Both are just as interesting and fun to wear, especially when you want to impress your date & have a handy men's gadget to keep the conversation going or end the date with a good loud ring from your trusty mechanical alarm timepiece as an excuse for leaving for another meeting. =)
