Watch Collecting

Firstly, let me stress that any subject matters found on my blog is based on my personal opinion + personal experience & it's up to you, the readers to decide whether to accept them or not, but I am more than happy to rec'v constructive comments & opinions.=)

Watch Collecting
This is a HUGE subject matter in the watch collecting world, as there are millions & millions of watches to chose from, on top of this, there are many magazines, blogs, websites, etc which would try to influence readers to buy the products that are listed on them.

And thanks to watch manufacturers & their demanding retail customers for coming up with all sorts of fabulous designs & features that totally confuse potential customers, making a simple purchase to a stressful affair with the chronograph, moon-phases, retrograde, compressor, anti-magnetic, tourbillon, etc........

And the most important factor of all, the all mighty $$$ factor, that finally pretty much force us to buy within our means & not the watches that we yearn. =)

There are basically 2 major groups of watches & they are classified as mechanical & battery driven watches. The mechanical watches are divided into 2 sub categories, being manual winding & automatics. For the battery driven watches simply means anything that runs on battery/cell, regardless if they have a mechanical rotor which helps to generate electric charge to be store in a cell/battery for later use by the watch.

For me, watch collecting means collecting them for the long run & must satisfy 1 important factor which is, serviceability of all the parts regardless of the number of years that we have collected them. Only mechanical watches meets this, as they can be dismantled, clean, oiled & reassembled many times over if done right & with proper care.

Metal parts found in mechanical watches do not deteriorate easily as compared to battery driven watches which are made up of PCB, plastic plates & gears. Many of the quartz watches, especially low end ones have sealed movements which cannot be taken apart for servicing and are meant to be thrown away once they break down, this is a major problem as many of us have thrown away many such watches & have contributed to the mounting problem of resource wastage, thus indirectly damaging our mother earth. But we do need a few battery driven ones, as they can provide accurate timing, help us navigate, tell us the altitude, depth of our dives, how our heart is beating, plus many more useful features. We need to make intelligent choices & select 1 or 2 watches with all the features that we need & have them replaced only if they are no longer working properly.

There are 2 ways of collecting watches, vertically and horizontally. Vertically means selecting a single brand that you like & collecting as many good samples from the maker's collection starting from their inception, which encompasses vintage to modern models. Documentations, displays, advertisements, books, etc are also interesting & adds a depth of nostalgia & surrenders to the collection when displayed together side by side. Horizontally means collecting selective watches from various makers, this is a very interesting way of collecting and can have many variations, like collecting watches, from a specific era (e.g. 1950s), with specific feature, of specific material, from the war, or of any combination that the collector pleases.

I personal collect watches from the vintage to the retro era, that is from the 1900s to 1970s, and they could range from simple classic to the funky loud outlooks, to the downright unusual. So you can see, collecting horizontally can offer more freedom & fun.

To give you a little insight into my world of vintage watches, I would be sharing some pics & info of some of my watches that I have collected over the past 15 years.

Hope you guys & gals would find my blog interesting & informative. mehr sehen fake rolex und replica hermes
